ATV Accident Death and Injury Statistics – Michigan

The number of ATV accidents across the US is significant, but there are big regional differences. Unfortunately, Michigan occupies one of the top positions in the country when it comes to ATV crashes and deaths.

General Michigan ATV Crash and Fatality Statistics

In the period from 1982 to 2012, Michigan occupied the 10th position among all states as far as ATV crash fatalities are concerned. The deaths that occurred during the period was 405. From 2013 to 2015, there were 35 new crashes that had a fatal outcome.

Another report suggests that the number of ATV deaths when public roads were used reached 52 in Michigan from 2007 to 2011. These accidents that result in fatal outcomes also gives Michigan one of the leading positions. While most states do prohibit the use of all-terrain vehicles on public roads, some drivers prefer those because of the easy access.

ATV Fires, Fatality, and Injuries: The Latest Cases

Over the years, multiple serious accidents have occurred in the state. Some of them have had a fatal outcome.

In June 2017, an investigation was launched following ATV fires in South Windsor. Two all-terrain vehicles caught on fire in the town and one of them was destroyed prior to the intervention of the local firefighters. It’s still not clear whether the fires were accidental and resulted from use or whether they were intentional.

In July, one person was killed, and another was injured in an ATV crash. The accident occurred in Brookfield on July 4. A woman aged 81 was killed and her daughter (aged 53) who was driving the ATV sustained serious injuries.

Teenagers and underage individuals aren’t spared from inclusion in the dark statistics, regardless of the fact that it’s illegal for them to drive ATVs.

A 14-year-old girl died in May 2017 following an ATV crash. The Sands Township accident occurred along a trail in the Upper Peninsula when the girl called Haley Vanabel, and one other passenger decided to go for a morning ride. The second passenger was another 14-year-old girl who didn’t sustain serious injuries after the crash.

In Traverse City, an ATV wreck caused the death of one and sent two more people to the hospital. At 3:29 pm, the local police department received a signal about a flipped over ATV in a field in Elmwood Township. A Polaris Razor was being ridden by three people. The driver attempted to do a quick turn, which caused the ATV to flip over, killing a 19-year-old woman on the spot. The other passengers (aged 23 and 26) were taken for treatment to Munson Medical Center.
