ATV Accident Death and Injury Statistics – Missouri

Just like many other states, Missouri has regulations that prohibit the use of all-terrain vehicles on paved roads. There’s also a restriction preventing individuals under the age of 16 from driving ATVs.

Regardless of these limitations, accidents with such vehicles occur and a number of these accidents have a lethal outcome. Since ATVs are recreational vehicles, many consider them to be a lot safer than automobiles or motorcycles, for example. This is the main reason why many of the crashes involve minors under the age of 16.

Missouri General ATV Injury and Death Statistics

While Missouri does have a smaller number of ATV accidents than the states where the situation is the worst, there are still multiple ATV crashes with a fatal outcome every single year. In 2004, there were 13 ATV-related fatalities. The number went up to 17 in 2005 and 14 in 2006.

In 2013 alone, Missouri had 20 ATV accidents with a lethal outcome. The total number of deaths caused by all-terrain vehicle crashes for the period from 2004 to 2013 was 141, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports.

ATV Accident Death and Injury Cases in Missouri

The numbers show that the situation in Missouri isn’t the best it could be. A couple of ATV-related deaths have already occurred in 2017, and there were multiple crashes in 2016.

Over the Memorial Day weekend in 2016, seven people died in crashes. One of the crashes involved an ATV. A pedestrian in Ray County was struck by an ATV. While the driver wasn’t injured, their alcohol sample was positive.

In 2015, a five-year-old boy was killed in an ATV accident. Investigators believe that the boy was riding on the vehicle in Park Hill when the machine malfunctioned and the father lost control. As a result of the malfunction, the ATV crashed into a tree and flipped over.

There haven’t been reports about ATVs catching fire or exploding in Missouri, but as the above example suggests, malfunctions still occur.

Loss of control over the all-terrain vehicle is another quite common cause of accidents that either lead to severe injuries or death.

In May 2017, a man was killed in Montreal Missouri after losing control of his ATV. The 47-year-old was driving the vehicle on the evening of May 25 on Freedom Ridge Road. According to the crash report, a loss of control led the ATV to overturn multiple times. The driver wasn’t wearing a helmet when he got ejected from the ATV. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
